DC motors are classified into
- shunt motor
- Series motor
- Compound motor
The compound motor is again classified as
- Long shunt motor — in long shunt, the shunt field is parallel with both the armature winding and series winding.
- Short shunt motor- in short shunt, the shunt field is only parallel with armature winding.
A compound motor can also be classified as
- Differentially compound — in which the fluxes of series and shunt are not equal and opposite direction.
- Cumulative compound- in which the fluxes of series and shunt are in the same direction and can be added.
